HISTORY

The history of Château de Calavon is intrinsically linked with that of the Audibert family, winegrowers and owners of the estate for five generations. In the family and the region it is an adventure that has been passed from father to son since the end of the 19th century.

At the heart of the Pays d’Aix, the Château de Calavon is without doubt the oldest wine estate in Lambesc, renowned for the quality of its terroir and its organic wines. The first traces of viticulture date back to the period of the Princes of Orange, and it was then the Audibert family who developed and structured the Estate.

At the heart of Provence, Château de Calavon has been recognised for over a century for its exceptional terroir, producing organic wines and olive oils with character.

THE
TERROIR

The Chateau de Calavon estate, located in the commune of Lambesc and undertaking organic agriculture since 2013, has one hundred hectares of grapevines and fifteen hectares of olive trees. The vineyard extends over two localities in the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence and IGP Méditerranée appellation, allowing a diversity of terroirs and exposures.

Le Château

The vineyard still has its historic plots around the Château, protected by a pine forest, surrounded by a wild scrubland, and whose single-holding configuration has remained the same for three centuries

On south-east facing terraces, the grapevines are planted on arid earth and stony clay-limestone soils, offering optimal conditions for the production of structured and concentrated wines, including reds classified among the richest in in the appellation.

La Crémade

Plots of diversification and symbols of renewal, the grapevines planted in deep soils and protected by the Chaîne des Costes are among the most recent grapevines of the Estate.

The Estate has around fifteen grape varieties, including the oldest, century-old carignans and grenaches, allowing a wide aromatic palette. Reds: syrah, grenache, carignan, cabernet-sauvignon, cinsault, mourvèdre, counoise, caladoc, merlot. Whites: rolle, clairette, sémillon, bourboulenc, sauvignon, chardonnay, and grenache blanc.

The olive grove

The olive grove is made up of century-old trees, then expanded for the first time in the early 2000s under the command of Michel. It then took on a new dimension with the arrival of Sébastien Philibert between 2016 and 2017 to reach its actual size of 15 ha.

Depending on the year and the quality of our harvest we produce a high quality fruité vert or Maturé noir oil. With the greatest respect for the Aix en Provence protected designation of origin, they are produced from 3 species: picholine, aglandau, salonenque.

THE
WINEMAKER

Arnold MAS
Maitre de chai

First and foremost, it was geography that led Arnold to the world of wine. He already had a significant interest in the influencing factors of soil, climate, and terrain on vegetation. This sensitivity enabled him to apply his knowledge to viticulture and later to wine production.

What he enjoys about wine is, above all, the exchange and sharing, being able to immerse himself in all the professions to constantly improve his approach to the product.

His wish for Calavon wines? “To preserve the current heritage and know-how that has always guaranteed the quality of the wines, while moving towards contemporary methods to protect, notably, against climatic hazards.”

Our
Organic philosophy

Driven by the vision of the Audibert family, we have been working on the grapevines in Ecocert certified organic agriculture since 2013 with the strictest respect for the environment, finding the balance between agriculture and life to preserve the rich biodiversity of the vineyard.
